As bushfires ravaged rural South Australia and closed the Sturt Highway, cars full of fervent Adelaide University soccer girls meandered safely to the Riverland for the 2014 Junior Camp.

The searing summer heat took a break for a couple of days and more pleasant conditions prevailed.

Friday was ‘get to know you’ night and everyone was allocated to one of five coloured teams.

On Saturday, ‘not so big’ Kev put on a ‘big smile’ for his Magic FM radio interview, which gave the AUSC camp and the Riverland training group, some positive PR.

Tor, Tony and Kevin facilitated drills and team discussions about playing positions and roles before lunch.

An action packed Saturday afternoon was spent on the river being flung around on biscuits, jumping from tree ropes and kayaking. A big thankyou to Paul Wilson, Caroline and Deb.

Stacey Gwiazda and Tor ran the evening session on game play and skill acquisition. This was followed by a night of skill challenges in AUSC’s ‘Win it in a minute’ contest. The ‘green’ team was triumphant and all participants enjoyed a fun night including the many parent spectators!

On Sunday we ran the 5-a-side competition with the ‘red’ team (pictured in main photo) going through undefeated and holding on 5-4 in the grand final.

Thankyou especially to all the parents who came up, the players for their outstanding behaviour, Berri Caravan Park, Berri Soccer Club and Jane Wilson. – Kevin
