The C’s this week took on Mercedes in the ‘top of the table’ clash (both had a win to start the season).
Chris rung in the changes, with Leo, Chester, Jacky, Austin and Collins all elevated to the starting line-up. A quick look at Mercedes 4ths before kick off revealed more than a couple of very experienced campaigners whom all of whom has played at a higher level in the past.
Early on the boys looked really good, stringing together some nice passes and generally looking good, for about 5 minutes we were camped on the edge of the Mercedes box, but were unable to capitalize. As the half wore on though, Mercedes began to gain the ascendancy. After a couple of near misses (including an excellent clearance off the line by Bobby), Mercedes scored the 1st goal by way of a penalty…. Yes there was a hand on a shirt, but it did seem to be quite a soft decision. Soon after they were 2 goals ahead, as their right winger showed his pace and hit a very good cross into the box… This was bundled over by the big striker, but it did look like there may have been a hand involved.
No such excuses can be made for Mercedes 3rd goal however, as a beautiful dipping strike came in above Graeme’s outstretched hand and dipped under the bar to make it 3-0.
Late in the half Mercedes had 2 chances to add a 4th goal, but fortunately Graeme tipped one wide and spoilt the other.
At the Break Austin, Collins and Ahmed came off from the midfield and Chester from Defence. This brought Tim to left back, whilst Manny and Sam moved to the wings, with Wez coming back into the central midfield and Jeffrey came on up front.
In the second half the boys really lifted – with the back 4 looking increasingly solid and Tim, Bobby and Leo delivering slick balls to our midfield we begun to gain the ascendancy. Manny and Sam’s pace really began to show as we stretched the Mercedes midfield and defence. Late in the game Wez put through a nice pass to Robert who slotted the ball home well with a lovely left footed strike. In the end though Mercedes won the match 3-1. The boys though really showed some endeavour in the second half and that was the most promising sign from the team.
Another outstanding game from both Bobby and Robert at either end of the field, whilst the calm heads of Leo, Wez and Harry were very important – Also Tom at left back really showed some ability.
Bad luck boys, but some very promising signs for the remainder of the season. Cup round next before the grudge match against the Blacks.
Just wanted to add – well done to the A’s who managed to topple last seasons champs 3-1 – very good start to the season.
