The B’s started much like last week and conceded a goal in the first minute due to hesitant defending in the box. I have said many times that defenders need to take responsibility in the box and not leave it for someone else – still plenty of room for improvement in that direction.
To the great credit of the players however, the heads did not drop and the Whites put in their best performance of the season from there on in. Duffy, Gayen and Luke were superb in defence, with Luke probably putting in the best performance seen in the Uni Whites B’s for many a year. He was all over the pitch, in defence, in the midfield and even on occasion surging forward to cause all sorts of hassle for the Rostrevor defence.
The midfield held their own and Michael Krause was winning plenty of hard ball and holding up Rossies at every opportunity. Wez was his creative self and was working tirelessly all over the pitch. Justin was a different player from last week and showed the sort of player he can be when he puts his mind to it.
Simon was having a ding dong battle with his opponent and in true Cappy style gave away frees but won plenty of hard ball and put his opponent off his game.
The game was pretty even but the lads managed to grab an equaliser when Justin poached a rebound in the box after a superb ball through by Saf and a shot by someone (Yuki I think).
The lads went in at half time at one goal each and not looking like being beaten in any aspect of the game. Wez came off at half time to bench it for the second eleven and he was replaced by Sab with Jason moving into the centre.
Rossies got a lucky second after about ten minutes in the second half after Steve Saf superbly slotted the ball home past Ben. My theory is that Saf was so confident we could score another two that he thought he would piss Ben off by scoring past him. The other players on our team realised if Saf could score, anyone could, and therefore no-one was disheartened.
The boys battled on in what was a really good game of soccer by both teams. Our defence was solid and Luke continued to rampage all over the place. Yuki was causing problems up front and it was well deserved when he got the equaliser. Seeing the keeper off his line from about 35 yards out on the boundary he decided he would do a smash lob over his head into the top left hand corner. These are the goals we usually concede and so when this went in, I knew we would win.
With about ten minutes to go Luke decided he hadn’t quite done enough in the game and took possession just in front of half way. He then proceeded to beat 23 defenders Mike Vicariu style before doing one final cut back and smashing the ball into the corner of the net. Truly the best goal I have seen in the B’s in my ten years at the club (other than my two on handicap).
The lads remained resilient for the remainder of the game despite some late sustained pressure from Rostrevor and finished up with a well earn win. A real cracker lads, well done.
The problem now of course is to back it up. All players should be available and we should now go on to beat CBC who beat us earlier in the year. That should be motivation enough.
See you at training.
