Adelaide University defeated Cove FC 1-0 to continue its unbeaten run at the start of the State League 2 season.

The impressive 1-0 away win knocked Cove off top spot as The Blacks head into the Coronavirus break as one of only three unbeaten teams in the competition.

Going into the game Cove sat top with three wins from three starts. Adelaide Uni were mid table with one win and two draws.

“We were quietly optimistic but knew we had to be at our best to beat a strong Cove team away,” says player coach Matt Gaston.

Cove won the toss and elected to play with the wind. The Blacks defended well in the first half, kept things tight and created opportunities on the break.

“We went into half time at 0-0 feeling like we were on top.”

“The second half started with a bang, with some excellent build up play leading to Daichi Asanuma getting in behind on the left and cutting for Brad MacGowan to finish in the 47th minute.”

MacGowan had a chance to double the lead minutes later when the exact same play replicated itself, but he hit the post and it went wide.

The Blacks continued to control the game and created several more goal scoring opportunities. They saw out the game to take the three points.

“It was definitely our best performance of the season, everyone contributed, and the team continues to grow in confidence,” says Gaston.

“We are well placed after four rounds and will see what unfolds following the break.”

The State League reserves team missed its chance to go top, but still remained undefeated with a 2-2 draw. Zachary Kockan (10”) and Robert Grasso (78”) featured on the scoresheet.

In the Under 18 game, Joachim Paronis (32”) and Taylor Lewis (87”) both scored as The Blacks lost 2-3 to the home team.
