The Blacks played with heightened confidence following their win in the previous round but were bested by rivals Monarchs away from home.

SAASL Division 3 Round 13

Adelaide University Black 0-4 Monarchs

The Blacks arrived at Monarchs ground prepared to take points from their lower-table rivals.

Monarchs first chance to score came from a quick counterattack but Blacks defender Tim Capps tripped their attacker and received a yellow card.

A tense midfield battle ensued and for a while neither side conceded much ground.

At 34 minutes, the Blacks tried unsuccessfully to clear the ball out of defence, the ball rebounded to their striker and he slotted it past Blacks ‘keeper Jacob Davey for 1-0.

Shortly after the restart, a Monarchs player sent a through-ball to their striker who had the ball taken from him by Andre Birve, but they regained possession.

Monarchs passed the ball out to the right and slid it across goal for their striker to double their lead.

At 38 minutes, Joe Henderson curled a freekick to the back post and Luke Urban leaped to meet it but his header sailed over the bar.

The half ended 2-0.

Into the second half, Monarchs countered from a Blacks attack and looped the ball past ‘keeper Davey but Birve was on the scene to make a goal-line clearance.

At 71 minutes, the ball bobbled around in the Blacks defensive box before being bungled in from close range by Monarchs for 3-0.

With 10 minutes to play, Monarchs passed the ball through the Blacks defence and the referee blew for offside, but the linesman had his flag down.

A Monarchs midfielder disputed the referee’s offside call and he was yellow-carded for dissent.

Monarchs attacked again, slid the ball across the box and slotted it in the goal.

The match ended 4-0 to Monarchs.

“Happy with the boys… Competitive loss but never want to lose against Monarchs,” Blacks coach Mohan Karthigeyan said.
